Outlines

This database presents statistics of the hearing-threshold-level distribution as a function of age. The values are displayed for men and women separately in the form of an audiogram.

For retrieving data of Japanese people only, see Statistical distribution of hearing threshold levels as a function of age (Japanese data).

Parameters

Example image

(A) Age
Specify the age band of subjects from 20 to 70 years in two-digit integers. The value can be input in 10-year increments.
(B) Gender
Choose "men" or "women".
(C) Percentiles
Select the percentile(s).
NOTE  The 10th percentile, for example, signifies the hearing threshold level of a person below which thresholds obtained from 10 percent of population, who have better hearing ability, of the specified age band and gender fall.

About this database

Data presented in the audiogram are the hearing threshold levels of both-ear average, in decibels, measured for otologically normal persons (i.e., those with no sign of injury or disease that might affect their hearing ability).

The values are expressed as the deviation from the median, which is designated as 0 dB, for 18-year-old listeners.

Hearing thresholds of this database were calculated by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and were adopted as a basis for revised ISO 7029[1].
